"India has reached the forefront of world coal scene, ranking 3rd in total coal production largely due to rapid increase in contribution (presently 94%) from opencast coal and lignite mines. But the major problem encountered by opencast mining is the overburden waste rock production and its disposal. The mine economics demands minimum waste rock production and further dumping the waste rock in a minimum area. There is an urgent need to maintain safety of opencast mines along with maintaining the mine economics. One of the most important safety aspects of opencast mining operation is slope stability i.e. to maintain stability of the faces of quarry batter and waste dumps ( both within and outside the quarry). India witnessed several cases of major slope failures i.e. landslides (with fatality and no fatality) in some of the major opencast Coal & lignite mines of Coal India and Gujrat Mineral Development corporations and other mining companies, for the last twelve to thirteen years. The author had been the Principal Investigators of all the scientific investigations for Dump failures of Jayant, Sasti, Khadia, Kolarpimpri and Highwall failures of Jhingurdah, Umrer, Rajmahal of coal mines and Lignite mines of GMDC, GPCL, GIPCL. This "Monograph" is to disseminate his experiences gained during scientific investigations of all the above opencast mines."--Amazon.com.
