A good life, well lived, is a story worth telling. And while it has been good, I cannot say my life is different from any other citizen - except in one principal way; I am the offspring of a shoemaker's son from Germany and a baker's daughter from New Zealand. It is a very unlikely union of two families living halfway across the world with a twenty million to one chance that a marriage would occur between two of their children. Once both the two families emigrated to the United States in the late 1800's, they lived about 5 miles apart from each other in Utah. The shoemaker's family lived in Lehi - my father, Charles, was their seventh child and the first one born in the United States. The Baker's family lived in American Fork- my mother, Amy, was only one when they departed from New Zealand. As the shoemaker's son and the baker's daughter matured, they sought out appropriate companionship. The male mentality of that day dictated that the girls in the neighboring town were more beautiful than the hometown girls; consequently, Charles courted Amy and were married at ages 22 and 18 respectively in 1902. And thus, I, Robert, was born of a shoemaker's son from Germany and a baker's daughter from New Zealand twenty years later. I have had a good life, and this is my story.
