"I wrote this memoir when I was eighty, I am now ninety-nine and it is hard to believe that I will be one hundred in a few months' time.As I wrote in this book "It has been a lifetime blessed with much good fortune".Things have changed a lot from when South Australia was first settled, and our ancestors first came here. I wrote this for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to record their ancestry and what life was like in my youth, as so much has changed since then - it is just so different." - Doris PhelpsA beautifully written memoir for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Doris gives her descendants an insight into her life and the changes she has seen over eighty years of living in Australia. Born in 1923, Doris describes the life of her and her six siblings growing up in the Barossa Valley, meeting her husband (a soldier) during the war, and starting a new life on a vacant fruit block in Loxton North as part of the Loxton War Service Land Settlement Scheme, while also bringing up her children, one with a disability. Throughout the book, Doris writes of her many interests and the way she has immersed herself in the communities where she lived, being involved in a number of committees and the establishment of new services. It also shows how she has continually sought to learn new skills and has adapted to the ever-changing world and new technology by remaining curious and accepting changes rather than resisting, taking on new interests, travelling, and advocating for her family, as well as the interests of others. This book combines two of Doris's passions - family history and writing, and we are all lucky to be able to read about her life and experiences over the past 100 years.
