In the Spring Semester of 1987 the Lesley University School of Counseling Psychology asked Dr. Robert M. Johnson PhD to present a graduate course entitled: The Study of Religion and Therapy. The stated purpose of this course was to explore the ways religion and therapy interact in the experience of the therapist and the client. It was designed to be an experiment in view of the possible development of a Graduate School Program for the Study of Religion and Therapy. At the time, Pastoral Counseling Institutes were springing up in the greater Boston area. The present study represents one of the peak moments of human history, when two major movements lock horns in an effort to resolve both their differences and their similarities. Over the past five hundred years the transition from a medieval cosmology through the renaissance struggle for a wedding of the intuitive and humanistic mode of thought, to a newly emerging rationalism, finally led to a romantic materialism based on empirical science.Arriving on the latter stages of this movement toward the rational and scientific, a new science was born that would eventually be given the name of Psychology. It began as a simple medical response to the newly perceived forms of "mental illness" that societies of the west had been struggling with for over three hundred years. The first psychoanalysts were pioneering new methods for dealing with these confusing problems that had been treated with detention in most cases. The issue continues to be of vital interest to our culture today as we struggle with "conservative values" and "liberal agendas" in almost every aspect of Politics, Religion and Psychotherapy.
