William J. Craddock was barely 21 when he wrote Be Not Content, which is widely recognized as the defining book of the San Francisco Psychedelic Revolution in the 1960s. Craddock was a bright, middle-class kid living in Los Gatos, California who joined an "outlaw" motorcycle club and rode his beloved Harley Davidson with the Hells Angels when he was only 16 years old. During that time, he published an underground newspaper at San Jose State, majoring in English and drama, and went to poetry readings given by Alan Ginsberg - all the while taking strong doses of LSD in hopes of discovering the meaning to life and a purpose to his own existence. Be Not Content was accepted by Doubleday in 1968 and languished in its offices until 1970 when it was published to wide acclaim. The book sold out of its first edition, but Doubleday inexplicably forgot about it. However, its readers did not, and used copies on the Internet are listed for as much as $950. Newspaper critics also took notice and compared Be Not Content to the best works of Jack Kerouac, Ken Kesey, Tom Wolfe and Hunter Thompson. "Superb in the tradition of Kerouac's On The Road, with overtones of Ken Kesey and Hunter Thompson's Hell's Angels, but Craddock's style is all his own." -- Robert Kirsch, Los Angeles Times "The definitive book of the acid-freak movement. A psychedelic pilgrim's progress of beauty, intelligence, sensitivity." -- Joseph Haas, Chicago Daily News "An astounding book, so good it defies praise. The writing is superb. Craddock is a born writer with an iceberg of talent." -- Shane Stevens, Chicago Sun Times "Willam J. Craddock's masterpiece, legendary to those in the know, is as exhilarating now as ever." -- Elizabeth McKenzie, author of The Portable Veblen, long listed for the 2016 National Book Award "Passages so vivid I feel like I need to be talked down after reading them." -- Micki James, Goodreads This 50th Anniversary edition contains a new foreword by his publisher and friend, Jay Shore, and an introduction by his sister, Diane Craddock, as well as a selection of photos, drawings and other writings by Craddock.
