Beyond the Ivy is the sequel to Andrea M. White's debut novel, Under the Ivy. As was the case with her first book, Beyond the Ivy is a murder mystery that takes place at the fictional Wakefield University, located on historic Beacon Hill, in Boston, Massachusetts. We return to Wakefield's campus, just a few months after the murder of Vice President Jack Doyle had rocked the school to its very foundation. Much to the dismay of Wakefield's President, Peter Kingston, over Labor Day weekend another body is found on campus, and Boston police detectives Foley and Hunt are, once again, called upon to investigate a complex case. All of the same characters return in this outing with a few, highly provocative, additions. This time, while the president's particular brand of laissez-faire is still a factor, the murder in question can be attributed more to the extracurricular activities of a vicious criminal element that has invaded Wakefield's ivy covered walls. During the previous investigation, the professional relationship between Boston Homicide Detective Michael Foley and the president's chief aide, Alexa Coughlin had become quite personal, and the romance that had begun last June was still going strong. This would add an interesting dynamic into the current investigation, as by providence and preference, Alexa finds herself, deeply and perhaps dangerously involved.
