His neighbors call him BUFFALO MAN. Anthropology professor Kitchi iinii ksikksinaattsiwa, KIT WHITE BUFFALO, a fifty-eight-year-old Blackfoot Indian, lives in a twenty-foot-tall buffalo-hide tipi on his 300-acre buffalo ranch and drives a red, mint condition 1959 Cadillac Biarritz. A life-long bachelor, Kit has spent forty years of his life borrowing a white man's existence, running from his aboriginal nature, his love for KIMI RUNS FAST BLACK BEAR, and his fear of BILLY EAGLE, the man who raped Kimi and threatens to kill him if he ever returns to Browning, Montana. While lecturing his Native American Anthropology class at the University of Oklahoma, White Buffalo falls unconscious to the floor. In Oklahoma University Medical Center north of Norman, Oklahoma, he spends Christmas break in a coma. In this state he has an out-of-body experience and meets MINGAN, GRAY WOLF, a 1730s spiritual Blackfoot, who returns him to his body and promises to guide him through the remainder of his life. Gray Wolf takes White Buffalo on a spiritual journey back to a day in his youth when he and Kimi lived innocent lives. When Kit awakens, he learns that he has an inoperable brain tumor and three months to live. He resolves to return to Browning, Montana, riding on a travois pulled by his gigantic white buffalo. He has ninety days to live and a sixty-five day, 1600-mile journey to complete. Kimi lives a spinster's life for forty years, refusing to marry Billy Eagle, even though she has his baby. Living 1600 miles apart, she and Kit are both haunted by the spirits of neglected love, cathecting all the days of their lives in loneliness. Gray Elk warns Kit that his life will be meaningless unless he faces the guilt of denying his love for Kimi and his cowardice of Billy Eagle. Mingan says he must do this if he wants to spend eternity with the ancients on the Dog Star.Kit White Buffalo creates a caravan to accompany him on his 1600-mile journey back to Browning, Montana to expunge his fears and die an aboriginal Blackfoot on his own land. JOHN TURTLE MAN will drive his farm truck full of supplies and his tipi. AUTUMN RUNS FAST BLACK BEAR, illegitimate daughter of Kimi, will drive his red 1959 Cadillac. Oklahoma State Police cars will lead and follow the caravan all the way to Browning. Four Cherokee body guards on horseback will accompany the caravan and change nations as the caravan crosses into each new state along the way. Media trucks from N.B.C., A.B. C. C.B.S. FOX and CNN will document the journey from beginning to end. White Buffalo teaches the television audience Native American history that they never learned in school. Aside from paying some Oklahoma gang members to burn Kit out and kill him before he begins his journey home, Billy Eagle attacks the caravan four times before it reaches Browning, Montana. White Buffalo suffers a seizure and is flown by Medivac to University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado for a four-day relapse. Once the world famous caravan enters Browning, Montana, Kit must resolve four issues before he dies in order to live his eternity with his ancient Blackfoot relatives on the Dog Star. He must reunite with Kimi Runs Fast Black Bear. He must cleanse himself in the three streams atop the Mountain of Three Waters. He must face Billy Eagle in a fight to the death in order to become a true Blackfoot warrior.
