Black people have rarely had opportunities to voice our lived experiences in mainstream arenas, leading to our development of workarounds. Marginalized communities often turned to art to capture these experiences, as evidenced by the long tradition of folklore and music throughout the diaspora. They pull from and contribute to theoretical frameworks often attributed solely to the academy, which effectively erases the great debt the academy owes to the community. Creative work, despite being dismissed as a tool of the elite, less rigorous than traditional academic work, and/or inaccessible, has a centuries-long history of creating and holding space for those of us oppressive structures deem unworthy. To name an experience, and take it a step further and record it, is an act that can be both liberatory and one of resistance by Black people underneath systems that have sought to genocide us and continue to do so. Black people have an immense amount of revolutionary potential, as even the simple fact of being Black and alive is radical act. Art allows Black people, namely Black women and girls, the ability to document and explore our experiences through our lenses, rather than one that hinges upon a white supremacist deficit model that seeks to normalize and perpetuate oppressive ideologies, such as Eurocentric and Western viewpoints and models of knowledge-making. It is concerned with the gap between creative and so-called academic work, issues of representation and accessibility, and the crucial role art has in many marginalized communities for survival, self-expression and self-definition, and community.My research is developed from Black feminist theory-owing a special debt to Patricia Hill Collins' concept of self-definition and Darlene Clark Hine's concept of dissemblance for its existence. I've included excerpts of poems by people of color that showcase how poetry created by poets of color fulfills these without having to rely on the often inadequate and inaccessible routes academia traditionally offers. Throughout this paper, rather than employ the distancing language of them or they when talking about people of color, especially Black women, we and our will be used, a deliberate choice meant to close the gap between the academy and community and undo the myth of objectivity often touted by academics, along with further legitimizing individual Black women as the best sources of our own experiences. My work argues that identity politics is not a forbidden phrase; it is our identities-and the meanings applied to them by oppressive, systemic forces-that shape our material conditions. Black women cannot choose to simply be Black or simply women because we are simultaneously both, and this intersection of identities informs our social and class positions throughout the world. Regardless of whether our writing is labeled creative or academic, neither are objective, and subjectivity is not inherently a negative or a flaw in research as Eurocentric tradition demands. Cataloguing our experiences is a crucial act of resistance to the relentless violence of colonialism, imperialism, and continued genocide.
