Lincoln (1870-1944) was an American author of novels, poems and short stories, many set in a fictionalized Cape Cod. He was born in Brewster, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod, but after the death of his father his mother moved the family to Chelsea, Mass., a manufacturing town outside Boston. His literary output celebrating "old Cape Cod" was in part an attempt to return to the place of his happiest memories, before tragedy drove the family from their home and his portrayals also offered readers an antidote to the rapid modernization America was undergoing at the beginning of the 20th century. His stories frequently appeared in popular magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post and The Delineator, and there have been six films based on his work. This 'Story of the Coast' was first published in 1904.
