Description

This is the sequel to an earlier book by Charles Harris, Civil War Relics of the Western Campaigns. This new book, Civil War Relics of the Western Campaigns & Beyond, contains a huge array of mostly-excavated Civil War artifacts arranged by locations recovered within the Western Campaigns, including most southeastern U.S. states. Features over 1,000 color photographs, mostly by Harris, with detailed caption information and locations of recovery. By definition, the Western Campaign or Theater of the American Civil War encompassed the states of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee, as well as parts of Louisiana east of the Mississippi River. For the purposes of this followup book, we have been liberal with our interpretations of the Western Theater, and it might better be described as Civil War relics of the southeast USA. Although seacoast operations are for the most part considered outside of the Western Theater, some are included here.Through the loose grouping of where artifacts are found, one can develop a better sense of which soldiers used what, where. As simple as that sounds, sometimes it is still hard to determine patterns of where certain pieces of equipment and styles were used, and by which troops. At other times, the connection is immediate, as in the case of personalized artifacts. It is the authors' hope that this book will aid in not only learning more about the American Civil War activities in the southeast, but also in helping to identify various excavated artifacts.
