"innick Kinnick Hill: An American Story" is now available in softcover, complete with facing-page English/Spanish translation, a format that recalls the balance required to keep ethnic identities alive. A hundred years ago, dozens of families journeyed from Spain to the United States in search of a better life in the growing zinc-industry towns in central West Virginia. As they created a new culture and a new home, they also added a bright new thread to the rich fabric of our nation. G. W. González's "Pinnick Kinnick Hill" describes the struggle and disappointment of Spanish immigrants while highlighting their remarkable triumphs. Writing from his perspective as a first-generation son of this predominately Asturian immigrant community, González recounts his memories in a form that is partly memoir, partly history, and partly fiction, all combined in a sometimes heartwarming and sometimes bittersweet celebration of how one small Spanish community survived and prospered in the ethnic cauldron of America. The Villanuevas—the fictitious Gonzálezes of the novel—settle in Clarkston (Clarksburg) and pursue occupations outside the zinc-mining and smelting industry. Juan Villanueva and his brothers take up jobs ranging from beer delivery to operating their own fish market. By 1905, Juan is able to bask in economic prosperity as he continued his pursuit of the American Dream.Historian Suronda González provides a full introduction to the ethnic history depicted in "Pinnick Kinnick Hill." “Hundreds of Spaniards settled in the Harrison County area, raising children in a unique mixture of customs and lifestyles from two continents,” González says. Harrison County was not only home to Spaniards, but to Italians, Ukrainians, Hungarians, and many other immigrants.
