Cyberstates 2003 consists of seven chapters detailing national and state trends in high-tech employment, wages, and exports. Venture capital investments and research and development expenditures also are examined. This report provides one-page high-tech ?snapshots? of the electronics and information technology industry for each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico by employment, wages, exports, venture capital investments, and R&D expenditures. The importance of the high-tech industry is delineated not only in the state overview pages, but also in the appendices that rank cyberstates by each metric. States also are highlighted by employment in specific technology industry segments like semiconductors, software services, and communications services. Our review of the most recent statistics shows that high-tech employment fell considerably in 2002. At the state level, 49 cyberstates lost technology jobs between 2001 and 2002, including such stalwart tech states as California, Texas, and Massachusetts. A precipitous decline in venture capital investments and in high-tech exports has had a dampening effect on the tech industry.Cyberstates 2003 is part of AeA?s cyber report series.
