Description

Thirteen year old Danny Longhouse is a half breed living with his recently widowed Anglo mother in a new subdivision in Montana on the outskirts of a small town. Danny wants nothing to do with his Blackfoot heritage.Along with his chubby with-an-attitude buddy, Wesley (12), an older than her thirteen years girl/friend, Emily, a neighbor Rafe (15) and his little sister, Nicole (10) these five have the adventure of their young lives. They stumble onto an ancient Indian Spirit in the hollowed out trunk of a tree. The ancient old Indian turns out to be Danny?s great, great, great, great, great grandfather. In the opening pages Danny, Wesley, Emily and Nicole ride their bikes out to a farmhouse and sawmill. They are chased off by a mean old farmer, Zackery. His wife is a horrible wretch of a woman as nasty as he is. Turns out as the film progresses they are the present day embodiments of the evil Cha-Kwee-Kah and his wife from Indian days in the past. There is a spectacular and supernatural fight between Zackery and his wife in their farmhouse. Zackery tries to keep them away from the old tree. He?s afraid they will be able to find the chamber inside and get back to the past. But they do find the chamber, go inside and make it their Danger Club. The old man, who becomes known as ?Old Man?, spirits the five of them magically back into the past to help him rescue his granddaughter Shining Star from the fearsome Crow Indian renegade Cha-Kwe-Kah (Face of Death) who has kidnapped her. There they meet Old Man?s constant companion, the seemingly insane Wakes Up Crazy. They also meet up with the thirteen year old beautiful tomboy, She-Na-We (girl who ride horses), Old Man?s granddaughter, and his grandson, the fourteen year old, handsome Brave Hawk. In their attempts to rescue Shining Star together they all go through Indiana Jones type trials such as buffalo stampedes, mountain lion attacks and a raging river filled with croc-demons. To assist them in their battle against Cha-Kwe-Kah they capture a spirit being in the form of an eagle ? Medicine Eagle. Medicine Eagle helps them go up against Cha-Kwe-Kah and his awesome cronies including Snake Fangs, the giant Mu-oog and Indian ghost renegades. In the end our Danger Club adventurers succeed in defeating Cha-Kwe-Kah and rescuing Old Man?s granddaughter. Each of them has learned valuable lessons and have come of age in important ways. Danny reconciles with his Indian heritage and meets the spirit of his departed father.Old Man sends them back to present day and they witness another mystical, supernatural event: The farmhouse and Sawmill of Zackery and his wretched wife are on fire and they burn inside. The direct parallel between Zackery and Cha-Kwe-Kah is discovered. As our five heroes are embraced by their loved ones it?s clear that they are no longer the same and they and their families are transformed forever. The book ends with Old Man and Wakes Up Crazy sitting against the old tree smoking on their pipes. The perspective changes and there is no subdivision. We are in the past and there is nothing but the two of them, the old tree and the beautiful countryside of almost two hundred years ago.
