Jennifer Ann Newman is an attractive, blond, twenty-four year old mathematics teacher who finds herself unprepared for what she encounters when she accepts the challenge of her first teaching assignment in an inner-city high school in Manhattan. Against the wishes of her parents and her fiance, a partner in her father's law firm, Jennifer decides to take a one year sabbatical from setting a wedding date, and leaves her pampered, country club life on Long Island's North Shore to live in a small apartment near Lincoln Central High. Her high ideals and good intentions in making a difference in educating and preparing her students for what she perceived was their 'real world', is suddenly and frightfully overshadowed. Jennifer finds herself catapulted into the stark reality of life's abuses and innate hostility during the late 1970's in the big city where circumstances inadvertently render her a pawn in the murder investigation of one of her students whose killer subversively manipulates and controls her very classroom. The school's principal preyed on those who were no longer able to cope in a system he knew he could no longer change, so he used his power to control the weaknesses of others to his advantage. Jennifer's refreshing beauty and tenacious rebuttals against his teaching philosophy both sexually inflamed and infuriated him. Determined to break her will, he manipulated circumstances to his advantage, protecting what he had built for his own benefit and self-preservation. When the Commander of the First Precinct's Vice Squad conducts an investigation into the murder of one of Lincoln Central High's students, he unexpectedly finds himself in a battle of love versus duty when he meets Jennifer. In a world of law and order, he goes head-to-head with people and obstacles on many fronts, but he and his nemesis, Jennifer's fiance, find themselves vying for her love, wanting to be the one to prove her innocence in a conspiracy whose tentacles ensnared both victims and perpetrators in every department. Jennifer struggled with her ideals and her determination to make a difference in an environment that festered with usurpers and malcontents. She is used by those she trusted, abused by those she feared, and loved by two strong and powerful men who want to possess her; one her mind, the other her heart. Jennifer makes it through the maze of corruption and cleverly contrived networking not unscarred, but with her heart intact when the man she really loved proves to be the one who was there for her all along.
