Description

A beautifully written and vividly colorful memoir, Death of a Fisherman is a torrent of truthful courage and defiant hope. As a boy, David Zailer experiences sexual violence at the hands of his father's friend - three episodes between ages 8-9 - who used the family church to hide unspeakable evil. As a result, David develops behavioral problems at school and is misdiagnosed as mentally retarded. He is then medicated to control his behavior and put in classes for children with learning disabilities. As a hopeless teenager, he drops out of high school. David's mother learns of the abuse, but both she and David are silenced by his narcissistic father. She later commits suicide with a gunshot to her head. David falls into life-threatening addictions as an adult. Yet, nevertheless, he becomes the owner of a successful business. In his early 40's, David finds sobriety and long-term recovery. He established Operation Integrity, a nationally recognized non-profit organization, where he developed a writing and speaking career that inspires thousands. In a surprising turn of events, fifty years after the abuse, David travels to his hometown, Houston, for business. He faces long-buried memories while encountering unique people who nudge him along in his journey of forgiveness. He meets a friendly but no-nonsense grocery store clerk, a compassionate, caring gravedigger, a quirky flower shop owner, her cranky-cussing husband, and several long-lost friends from childhood. With winsome yet authentic vulnerability, Death of a Fisherman is for everyone who has wrestled with the complicated family dynamics of religious, physical, sexual, and chemical abuse. It illuminates the path of forgiveness and offers hope for us all.
