"Deconstruction, as defined in this book, is a process that starts with a building, takes it apart, examines its various pieces, searches historical sources, and ends at a quarry. This book takes you on a virtual journey to eleven pairs of stone buildings and quarries in the six New England States. Featured buildings range from the 1820s to the 2020s. We meet people en route whose passion is building stone: geologist; sculptor; quarry worker and manager; historical society archivist; and masonry contractor. We learn from oral histories, archived construction plans and photographs; published accounts from newspapers and books; technical publications; and guidebooks. From these resources, we are able to piece together a plausible story about the life of a building. I am an architect by training, but to write this book, I became an amateur geologist. An overview of geography and geology precedes each segment–-Local, Inland, and Coastal—of the journey. Color-coded custom-drawn maps connect buildings and quarries and, along the way, lead to evidence of long-ago tectonic collisions, dinosaur migrations, and more recent advancing and receding glaciers. Geologic time--measured in millions and billions of years--is alien to our digital world of milliseconds and nanoseconds. Tables and text help make sense of the geologic time scale. Looking toward the future, the book examines strategies to mitigate the environmental impacts of quarrying stone as well as reclamation and adaptive re-use of abandon quarries. So, pack your virtual hiking boots, camera, scope, rock hammer, samples sack, and physical or digital copy of Deconstructing Stone Buildings; and get on board!"--Amazon.
