When I told my doctor I couldn't afford an operation, he offered to touch-up my X-rays. - Henny Youngman Walter Cronkite once said that America's healthcare system is neither healthy, caring, nor a system. In the autumn of my medical career, I found myself thinking just such thoughts. I practiced medicine for many years. At times during the years of my practice, I would inevitably experience moments of stress. However, the majority of my days were filled with poignancy and even laughter. Most of all I was grateful to have had the kind of work that provided me so much opportunity to help people. However, those Cronkite-type thoughts kept surfacing. For about the past dozen years I've thought more and more about healthcare problems in America. Eventually I began to gain some clarity about our non-system. The phrase Assholistic Healthcare popped into my head and this became the umbrella under which I began to view the big picture. I'm now 77. I retired at 75 in order to work on this book and develop a non-profit that I hope you'll learn more about. America needs to improve our healthcare system. We need universal healthcare. It would also be healing to recover some compassion and put patients before profits ; something we currently do not do. Can we achieve universal coverage, put patients first, save money for American families, boost the economy, and improve our healthcare performance? Absolutely! I was quite surprised to eventually come to realize that one of the ways we might accomplish this was thinking creatively about Medicare. To hell with government versus private, capitalism vs. socialism, Republican vs. Democrat. What matters is whether you, your children, parents, siblings, and friends can wake up each morning knowing that excellent and affordable healthcare is readily available without fear of financial distress or ruin. It matters that our national economy is not ravaged by the profound financial inefficiency of our current high-cost, patient-unfriendly delivery system. Given our many blessings in America, there is no reason any American should have to tolerate mediocrity where healthcare is concerned.
