Description

This is the history of a young German immigrant, Hans Hermann Straus, who came to this country as a nineteen-year-old. He had three things which set him apart: a brilliant mind, initiative, and empathy for others. His business successes were numerous. Ecusta, the paper mill in Pisgah Forest, stands out as the culmination of these three characteristics, the apex of his achievements and the basis for his legacy. Many people were associated, first with Straus and the production of paper and later (under the Olin Corporation) with the making of cellophane. Gradually changes came due to international events and the aabsentee landlorda syndrome. Ecusta became part of diversified holdings and finally, due to obdurate and inflexible attitudes of the new owner and the labor union, Ecusta went out of business.
