"The purpose of this 6-week action research study was to find out how first grade students could become active and engaged readers during independent reading time. The study was also designed to investigate the use of student feedback in learning new strategies. The research questions included: How do I engage students in reading during independent reading time? How can I help students become more involved in their reading during independent reading time? Implemented in a Title I school, the readers' workshop program consisted of weekly mini-lessons on five reading strategies, independent reading time, and partner and whole-class sharing. Qualitative and quantitative data collected included a field journal, pre- and post-intervention questionnaires, independent reading engagement observations, reading partnership contracts, debriefing discussions, and student interviews. Results indicated that students' were engaged in their independent reading during readers' workshop through learning to use different reading strategies and partner and whole-class sharing."--Abstract, p. 1.
