Rabbi Shimon Gershon Rosenberg (1949 - 2007), better known by the acronym formed by the initials of his name ShaGaR, as Rav Shagar, is the first modern native-born Israeli religious thinker. By means of talks on Hasidic texts, Shagar was able to advocate for the integration into the yeshiva of song and poetry, of silence, of prophecy, of discussing the reason for commandments, meditation and contemplation, seeking higher wisdom, and of course, the study of Kabbalah and Hasidut. Rav Shagar taught that our era has made a "transition from a 'Religion of Truth' to a 'Religion of Faith, ' without appeals to metaphysics, eternal truths or nationalism. Rather, in one's faith commitment to Torah, the Torah becomes the basis of who we are, and our freedom to express ourselves becomes our freedom to live according to the Torah. "A Jew finds his Jewish identity in the Torah, and through that his connection to God." Shagar sees that we have entered a new era in the process of Zionism. For him, Rav Kook was the era of the messiah of Joseph and now we live in an era of the messiah of David, where we transition from state building to personal growth and the growth of democracy - a transformative spiritual teaching of redemption.
