Description

Many communities are rethinking their ideas of mutual support, social economy, and community economic development and are using "Time Dollars" strategies to build on their existing support networks and create a strong and valued social economy. This book provides an introduction to the social capital strategy of Time Dollars and presents a process for increasing the effectiveness of family support programs through its use. Chapter 1 defines Time Dollars as a form of currency that people earn by helping each other and spend by getting help from others. For example, for each hour spent in tutoring, child care, literacy training, and other community-building activities, an individual earns Time Dollars, which can then be used to buy an hour of service. This chapter describes Time Dollars as an exchange that recognizes that all community members have skills, services, and goods necessary for the community to be whole, and presents the philosophy behind the strategy. Chapter 2 outlines ways in which Time Dollars are consistent with family support practice and how Time Dollars can complement family support services. Chapter 3 discusses how applying co-production to social service delivery can result in two-way transactions relying on reciprocity. Chapter 4 details the process for using Time Dollars, including establishing staffing, developing Time Dollars activities, recruiting participants, and implementing and maintaining Time Dollars. Chapter 5 discusses further details in running a Time Dollars network, including adding material goods and professional services. Chapter 6 provides examples of applications of Time Dollars strategies, including its link to child care, youth development, and senior support programs. Chapter 7 contains brief descriptions of how programs nationwide are using Time Dollars. Seven appendices include sample forms, frequently-asked questions about establishing community-based childcare, and social capital resources. (KB)
