Fullfat soybeans have been a viable feed ingredient in livestock diets since the 1970's, and they remain so today. A great deal of research on feeding fullfat soybeans to livestock, poultry, and aquaculture was done in the 1970's and 1980's, and that data has been summarized very well in two American Soybean Association-sponsored publications: the Fullfat Soya Handbook (1989) and the second edition of the Fullfat Soya Handbook (1996).Since it had been over 20 years since the Fullfat Soya Handbook had been updated, conversations between the Minnesota Soybean Research & Promotion Council, the North Dakota Soybean Council, the Northern Crops Institute, and South Dakota State University in the fall of 2017 led to the development of this latest version of the Fullfat Soybean Meal handbook. The goal of the latest edition was not to create a totally new and different publication, but rather to build on the solid groundwork of the first two editions of the handbook. Well-known and respected scientists within each discipline were asked to do a comprehensive literature review of fullfat soybean use in their field, and then write a chapter summarizing what they found. Therefore, instead of one uniform writing style throughout the entire publication you will see seven different writing styles in the handbook. Also, there is a difference in chapter length since much more research has been done in certain areas like poultry and aquaculture than in some of the other areas.Again, the goal of this publication is to build on the success of the previous editions, and to provide a summary of the most current research on fullfat soybeans since 1996.
