He offered them jobs of pushing a herd of "prime stock" north to Reed's Fort, Montana (later named Lewistown.) Riding into Whitehead's camp aboard two haymows, they were surrounded by bleating, smelly sheep. The boys smelled a rat. They set out north for Reed's Fort in the company of two hundred mangy sheep, one packmule, two crowbaits that appeared to want death, and one Border Collie, named Joe, who would prove to know more than both of them would ever learn. They were prepared, or resigned, to do the job.
