Description

A Story of Growing Up in Post-WWII AmericaA fateful detour had drawn him back to Gordon Street. Getting out of his car, standing silently on the sidewalk staring at the blank, empty windows of his old school, a scrapbook of snapshots opening somewhere in his head, pictures of nearly faded people flashing through his mind like magic lantern phantoms, he felt strangely transported back in time to the place where once he'd been called Billy. But why? Why was he back as a boy in his sneakers with a skate key in his hand? Maybe it was the pact he'd made once, almost forgotten - until now. Looking up the sidewalk spotting a towheaded kid in a T-shirt, scuffed Buster Brown's(r), pea-shooter sticking out the back pocket of his Penney's(r) pants, scooting stones across the street ricocheting them off the curb, approaching him, the boy turning, grinning back over his shoulder, "Hey, Billy, where've ya been? I've been waiting for you - always such a slowpoke. What took you so long, you forget our deal?" It was Gary. Shoving his left hand in his pocket, fingers finding a marble, Billy pointing with his right at the kid still grinning at him, "But you moved...left in the middle of the night, I never heard from you, not a single smoke signal, nothing, you can't be here for real." Dropping his chin to his chest, kicking toe of his right shoe into heel of his left like he always did, looking up with a cock-sure grin, "But I am - and so's Bonner and the Bug Man, even Garbage Dog. Nothing's changed. Heck, Jim's just spotted a new war zone in the back corner of the vacant lot by the alley, says they just moved in. We'll need to get some stuff - maybe some heavy stuff, you don't have a cherry-bomb, do ya?" Billy, shaking his head, "No, not even a lady finger, but," a thought suddenly exploding like a match in a dark corner of his mind, "but what about . . .You-Know- Who?" Hesitating, then, "Is he here?" Gary nodding his head, "Yep, he's here," holding his nose, "can't you smell him for cripe's sake? Your ears plugged? Can't you hear his squeaky, rotted out trike? Probably headed this way - quick, let's cut across the vacant lot, ditch him up the alley." "But," Billy frantically grabbing Gary' shoulders, "that can't be. Just can't be. He's..." Gary, "Yeh, I know," sounding like he was whispering from the far end of a tunnel, "but he's here, and so are we...maybe he never left...maybe he's just been waiting for us to come back."
