Description

The novel I invite you to read is titled: Giacomo's Peculiar Passion: Payback in Blood. This is a story of a man and a girl who live in the shadow of one of the world's most active volcanoes- Etna .The town is Catania, Sicily. The man is Giacomo. He still lives at home managing for his father a large acreage of olive orchards. He is twenty-eight years old. Although he never attended formal school, he is an avid reader and possesses a prodigious memory for everything he has learned. He is tall and muscular but also rough in terms of social graces. The girl is Anna. She is sixteen and has inherited beauty from her mother and exceptional intelligence from her attorney father who has already promised her to the son of his best friend. She grew up believing she would marry her father's choice. But the year was 1890 and Catania, Sicily was still provincial in many ways-not the large, busy city it is today. Young girls were still promised in marriage from an early age. Giacomo had not failed to notice Anna and had been aware how she was often followed by so many adoring young men. Anna paid no attention to Giacomo-a man much older than she, still in his dirty work clothes as he came to town, unconcerned about his appearance. It was a combination of extraordinary events that brought these two apparently unsuited people together. The only thing they had in common was the dominance of a wealthy father but fearful that the local Mafia Don was continuing to demand more and more of their wealth. During the relatively short time these two people were together, Anna learned what an extraordinary man Giacomo was and how others paled in comparison. Together Giacomo and Anna planned to run away from their respective homes in order to live together. Although Giacomo's plans were astutely drawn, a series of interfering events made their departure difficult. They managed to leave the island of Sicily and get aboard a steamer leaving Naples for America. While growing up, Giacomo had heard many horror stories about La Cosa Nostra and the brutality these gangsters were known for. In his mind, Giacomo believed that America would be free from such primitive threats and criminal behavior. To his surprise, he learned that he would come into direct contact with these men aboard the steamer Garibaldi. Thinking that he and Anna had escaped the notice of policemen at the port of Naples who were checking identifications and boarding permits for the voyage to New York, and having managed to get on board, the lovers spent their first few hours in a laundry room until the steamer was well under way at sea and unlikely to turn around and deliver them to the police. They succeeded in getting a small cabin from the bursar for the remainder of the trip. Late that evening on deck, as Giacomo and Anna were celebrating their cleverness by hugging and kissing in the moonlight, they were approached by three Mafiosi who seemed to know who they were. Because of the lateness of the hour, they had to face these men alone. Anna asked them if they would return her to her father. The leader, a sinister man in a dark suit, smiled and said he had a better idea. He said it would be easier for him to kill her companion and throw him into the sea and take her with him until he tires of her company. There were a few tense moments as Giacomo took matters into his own hands and proved once again that he was a perfect choice for the frightened Anna, feeling for the first time that her child was growing inside her. They found New York to be a jungle of strange faces and unintelligible voices. Fortunately Giacomo's supply of money was sufficient for them to live quite well for more than a year without employment or until their child was born. They both came to believe that New York was too dangerous a city for them and they decided to make plans to move on to Philadelphia, a smaller and more manageable city.
