"If you had enough faith, you'd be healed."How many times have you heard it? Too often people of the church believe that if faith can move mountains, it can fix anything. Living with a mental disorder is hard, and for those who live in the Gospel, this pat answer can be devastating. Even worse, it deepens the feeling of being misunderstood and alone. But you are not alone! There are many living with some degree of mental health issue and wishing that they could do something to help our brothers and sisters who are suffering through it right now. Let us share our experiences with you, whether you are suffering, or know someone who is and want to understand how to help, whether it is a friend, a family member, or someone in our congregation.None of us are mental health professionals, nor do any of us have a degree that allows us to practice medicine. We can't diagnose your problem, or recommend a treatment for it. We're not doctors, counselors or therapists. We have no certificates, degrees or diplomas to give us credibility. What we do have is lots of experience living 'in the trenches', so to speak. Lots and lots and lots of experience! As for our title; in music, melodies are the most well known part of any song-the easy, the normal, the tune that most are familiar with. But harmonies have different notes, different timing, and are often discordant. It doesn't seem like they should go together with the melody, or even with the other harmonies on the same page. Yet, somehow they do and the resulting music is so much fuller and more beautiful than the melody alone could ever aspire to be. We may envy those others. Our lives may not be so easy; we may have to reach farther, hold on longer, and move to a different beat. But we still hold an important place here, and have a reason for being within this great Plan.We are the Harmonies.
