Mike Cunningham is ending his life's journey. He's desperate, contemplating suicide because Margaret, the woman he loved more than life, has died. They met in Italy in 1955 while he was on military leave with two GI buddies. Margaret's cute, sexy, from England, and on holiday with her mother. They fall in love in romantic Italy; an innocent love born in Rome that climaxes in Venice. But their romantic holiday ends when they have to say goodbye in Basel, Switzerland. Just before Margaret and her mother's train leaves for Paris, Elizabeth invites Mike to come with them to England, but he has no more military leave time and has to decline. He promises Margaret he'll write but, instead, he runs away from love to marry his fiancee back home, the girl he never told Margaret about. It's a decision Mike regrets the rest of his life. Then, 35 years later, after a divorce, back in Italy, he miraculously finds Margaret again, marries her in England and bonds with her adopted son, Melton, the stepson he loves more than his own children. It's through Melton and his association with Mike's high school buddies, Bob & Frank, the other two Musketeers, that Mike and Margaret's love story unfolds. And, it's because of a letter and large manila envelope that Melton delivers to them from Mike that Bob & Frank not only dwell on the past, but have to face an unexpected future. Bob and Frank are in their late seventies, successful and retired, but can't quit going to the office because they love working. But to an unbiased observer, work has become doing what you want at the office. Shirley, a sexy, beautiful woman, keeps their office and apartment tidy and likes to flirt with Frank who is still quite a lady's man. Bob calls him the energizer Musketeer. It's Margaret's mystery desk that she leaves to Bob at her death that suddenly brings Frank and Shirley together one night at the office where sparks fly as Frank guards the desk to keep Mike's son, who thinks it has a secret compartment full of money, from destroying it. The desk's mystery continues to grow when Bob & Frank discover it contains a hidden letter written by Margaret. Then, as Melton searches to find out who his birth parents are, another hidden letter surfaces. This one was written by Margaret's mysterious aunt Martha. Both letters are linked to the mysterious and powerful Staunton Historical Society and two Staunton antique desks that date back to 1689. Both letters ignite fireworks when revealed. But it is aunt Martha's letter, written 45 years ago, that shocks everyone.
