Tsa Sohone, Michael's Caddoan grandfather, begins this first of three stories about his past lives on June 24, 2007 that commences with his departure from life as Zinesi (spiritual leader of his tribe) and his life energy's transition from bodily form to the Psyplex (central core of the psychological complex that houses all souls) for renewal. Tsa Sohone, along with a few other life energies, is charged with an important task, one that can only be accomplished by their assignment into the body of a mule named Old Blue, born in 1874 in the east Arkansas delta, a dangerous region in a tumultuous post civil war time. They are charged with protecting Lisa, a young lady on a journey with her parents and little brother to the western frontier. Old Blue, the mule with multiple souls led by the chief soul of Tsa Sohone, with a direct but sometimes tenuous connection to the great central power from the Psyplex, struggles at times to carry out his task as he gains knowledge of the powers he possesses; from his ability to shape-shift into the forms of his accompanying souls to his ability to understand and use his mule form advantageously in the world of humans who just view him as a mule. Though the twists of life are many for Blue and Lisa's family, he carries on through his first mission, one he learns is necessary to complete the second and third missions that together, will find finality with the arrival of the full moon in November 2012, the end date for the 4.7 billion year Mayan calendar; a specific period when time and space merge, when all perceptions and reality itself changes. Michael, not aware of his role after this first or second story, is astonished to learn the part he plays when the world goes into total renewal in the few months ahead.
