This publication is the hardcover book version of fine art photographer J W Johnston's project exploring imprints of time and family on his boyhood home, while also paying tribute to his parents. Johnston moved back to his boyhood home in a small upstate village, Whitney Point, NY, with his wife, Sharon Ball, in 2003. His father died in 1988 and his mother passed away in 2002. Johnston writes in the book's introduction, "Evidence of my parents' lives is everywhere: from my father's fading notes and carpentry calculations on cracked-paint walls to my mother's mud-encrusted canning jars on the cellar's dirt floor. Cleaning up this evidence would erase some of my parents' story, my story too. I yearn for the illusion of permanence. I am all too aware that life is ephemeral."Before sharing the black-and-white images Johnston produced for the Home Body project (also intended to be a fine art exhibition), Johnston illustrates brief written biographies of his parents - Rilla Stone Johnston and Wallter Kenneth Johnston - with old family photos and mementos to provide context for the monochrome images that follow. The book features an introductory poem by Johnston's wife, who writes as S. Y. Ball. In a separate section following the 28 fine art monochrome photographs, Johnston offers backstory and caption information for most of those images. The "Home Body" project is one way Johnston, who turned 70 in 2023, continues to cope with the death of his parents. Johnston writes, "I memorialize as caretaker, curator, son."The book is 76 pages in length.
