World War 1 (The Great War) was a cataclysmic event across Australia. The four-year conflict took the lives of more than 60,000 Australians with another 150,000 wounded or taken prisoner. Many of those who survived the conflict were scarred for the reminder of their lives, either physically or emotionally. In towns large and small across Australia, the war had a shattering effect. Gunnedah was just one example. More than 500 young men answered the call for more men in an area extending from Boggabri to Breeza-Currabubula and from Kelvin-Carroll to Premer-Tambar Springs, basically within a 50km radius of Gunnedah. When the call went out for volunteers for the war, young men stepped forward in large numbers, fired by the prospect of adventure and the ideal of defending the Empire and teaching the Germans a lesson. The Great Adventure, however, came to a shuddering halt for so many. Of the 500-plus who enlisted in Gunnedah, who were born in the town, went to school here or had come to the district to live, more than 120 were killed in action, died of wounds or were never found or seen again. No-one could have imagined a tragedy on such a massive scale. It was a stressful time at home, too, with family members living in dread of a telegram telling them their son or brother had fallen on a foreign battlefield. In The Line Of Fire also traces the actions in which Gunnedah service personnel were decorated, the lives that were drastically affected by war, as well as the memorials which sprang up as a grieving community paid tribute to the fallen.
