Description

Volume II. Jacob and his Uncle Zac return to Zed's ranch and are attacked by Modoc Indians. They arrive at Zed's ranch and stay for the winter. They leave early spring, taking 11 horses with them and head for the town of Landes. There is adventure and action in their travel. At Landes, Jacob meets with Graff and his filthy partners. Jacob and Zac attend a Box lunch social and Jacob surprises Mary. Zac meets the widowed school teacher Elizabeth and goes about trying to court her. The Windslow ranch hires a new cook who stinks to high heaven and the women's job is to clean him up. There is comedy, laughs and some tears. A pack of wild dogs start killing the cattle throughout the area. They must be stopped and the Indians come to the ranchers rescue. A Lieutenant Stephens and his cavalry unit try to move the Indians who live on the ranch. The Windslow Ranch defends the Indians and a skirmish is avoided. Jacob and Zed ride swiftly to Fort Boise to explain the situation to Major Lugenbeel who is the Commanding Officer at the fort. Jacob, Zac and his men drive 400 head of wild horses to Fort Boise for the U.S. Cavalry to purchase. The Civil War has not started, but Jacob and his men are attacked as they drive the horses to the fort by Confederate Soldiers who try to steal the horses for the Southern cause. Jacob is beaten and dying. There is romance, laughs, and plenty of adventure.
