Landfall is a novel of the Elizabethan adventurers who searched for the North West Passage, raided the Spanish treasure ships and dismembered Ireland in the 16th Century. It describes the lust for gold that drew some on a fools' errand to The Arctic and others to a bare promontory in South West Ireland, swept by Atlantic storms, to destroy an expedition of Spanish and Italian mercenaries, sent by The Pope in a doomed attempt to help Irish rebels resist the advance of English power. The expedition ended in a river of blood seeping from the execution fields, blood that stained the reputations of those who took part and those who profited from it. The subsequent Plantation of Munster saw ethnic cleansing and land confiscation on a scale that ensured centuries of resentment and rebellion, fracturing the old Gaelic way of life. The British Empire, first mentioned by John Dee, the English Magus and adviser to Elizabeth, competed with the great Maritime Powers for discovery, occupation and exploitation of the new-found lands. The poet, Edmund Spenser who gained lands in Ireland, wrote the manual for conquest and colonisation. Walter Raleigh sold his Irish lands to finance his colonial ambitions in America, leading to failure and ignominious death. Frobisher, the consummate seaman, architect of the Arctic Gold debacle, died out of loyalty to his men. Spenser saw his great ambitions dwindle amid the indifference of The Court, the influence of the rising power of the theatre and the resurgence of the Native Irish, Hell-bent on revenge. This is a story of courage and endurance, foolishness and occasional common sense, against the colourful background of Elizabethan London and the long, undeclared war against Spain.
