Description

Kimberly is a very real person, and a four-time cancer survivor. She began keeping a blog during her first round of lymphoma, and turned it into this book by writing narration around the blog and including further struggles with various forms of cancer. The book is touching, and also has wit and humor and is frequently not about cancer of any kind. From the book:"I'm driving a car." The mind has a wonderful defense system. It so quickly sets up detours and barricades to keep from being overwhelmed with unwanted information. Take that phrase that kept running through my mind - "I'm driving a car". What I was hearing on the phone didn't make sense, couldn't be real. This was what was real; I was driving. I couldn't drive and at the same time try to process the words that kept coming from my cell phone, and the only thing that seemed important was keeping that car going forward. In fact, at that moment it seemed absolutely vital. Finally I just talked over the voice, saying the only thing that I could. "I'm driving a car. I can't do this now. Here, talk to my husband." And I kept driving. The word "stunned" is used so frequently, but it truly describes how I felt at that moment. Like something hard had hit me, and I couldn't feel anything, or think about anything. I was scared and definitely ready to trade for the gallbladder surgery. I asked the only question that I could, although in my heart I knew what I was going to hear. "What kind of specialist?"When I spoke that sentence, time slowed down and I was very aware of every moment. I felt like it took forever for her to answer and at the same time I knew what she was going to say and I didn't want to hear it. I wanted to stop it from coming. "She's an oncologist-hematologist. She's very good." The doctor continued talking about directions, appointment time and other information, but none of it registered. All I could think was none of this could be real. I was driving a car. That was the only real thing. I was driving a car.
