In 1820 Lima, Peru under threat of revolt the Viceroy of Lima ordered the city's fabulous wealth to Mexico City for safekeeping. The wealth was loaded onto the Mary Dear, commanded by Captain William Thompson. The Captain and crew turned pirates and killed the guards and priests. They buried the treasure and before they could return they were captured by the British Navy.
