Using an empirical hermeneutic methodology, this single-participant study employs a qualitative and depth psychological focus into the nature and expression of depression within three generations. From participant interviews, a multigenerational case study narrative was developed, then interpreted, through the lenses of a depth psychoanalytic and psychodynamic hermeneutic. The primary research question queried the possibility of multiple and diverse expressions of depressive symptomatology extending to and beyond three generations, filling a gap in the clinical literature and research regarding depression and its expressions within family systems. An auxiliary research question asked how intergenerational transmission could be interpreted through the chosen lenses of psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychology, honoring the theories and thought of Sigmund Freud, Judith Butler, Andre Green, and Edith Jacobson. The prevalence of depression in its myriad forms within the United States supported the need for this research. The study aimed to add both to the body of knowledge about the topic, to knowledge about the experience of depression for the benefit of clinicians and clinical psychology as a whole, and to the body of knowledge within the specific areas of psychoanalytic and psychodynamic approaches to depression within the broader context of clinical psychology. An objective of this research was to learn more about depression and equally important to learn more from it. Results of this research study generated several conclusions. First, the non-linear, multifaceted, and diagnostic variability of generational expressions of depression were made manifest; from traits to disorders, along Axis I and Axis II, without gender bias, often existing comorbidly within or alongside other mental disorders, traumas, and losses. Second, the necessity of creating a multiple context for both diagnosis and treatment of depressive disorders that takes a both/and stance that includes its neurobiological, psychological, and environmental components was validated. Finally, assessing and working within a case study format from a depth psychological perspective that incorporates the concept of unconscious content on personal and collective levels provided an approach to research that is conducive to and concomitant with an exploration of the ancestral landscape of depression.
