In 1846, John Geddie (1815-1872) and his wife, Charlotte, became missionaries to the New Hebrides Islands in the South Pacific. When the Geddies reached the island of Aneityum, they found not only cannibalism practiced, but infanticide, and the killing of wives when their husbands died, as well. Among the achievements by Dr. Geddie and other missionaries on Aneityum was the abolishment of such practices, the conversion of about half of the natives by 1850, and the building of a large stone church by 1860. Geddie was also largely responsible for the raising of funds to acquire a 12.5 ton ship named the "John Knox," built in Scotland and transported to the islands in 1857. Dr. Geddie also transliterated portions of the New Testament into the Aneityum language. Among the trials faced by the Geddie family were dangers of being killed (and possibly eaten), measles and other epidemics brought in by brought in by decadent European and American sailors, embarrassment caused by the seduction by fellow-missionary, Mr. Archibald, of a native woman, and various tropical illnesses. Rev. Geddie's story is a thrilling testimony of the power of the Gospel to transform lives.
