My Chinese Procession is the story of one woman’s journey through time and across the globe to uncover the history of her late husband’s mother, Lee Siok-Uan. Part memoir, part biography, part imaginative recreation, part history, this is the account of how an Irish-German woman delved into the rich and complex world of early twentieth century China, working at first with only a bit of information about her mother-in-law’s past. Stretching from rural Pennsylvania to Xiamen, My Chinese Procession is like stepping into a photograph: we see Lee Siok-Uan as a child; as a young woman in an arranged marriage; giving birth to Tan’s husband, Jim. In order to see into a world alien to her own, Tan learned Chinese and traveled there, and while knowing nothing about China initially, Tan sought to discover for herself and the reader what it would have been like to live in the Central Kingdom of the Qing. To accomplish this, Tan invented a character, Li Jia-Nü, a relative to Lee Siok-Uan’s father. As lady-in-waiting to China’s fierce and long-surviving Dowager Empress, she alone could take us behind the forbidden walls. Among the stories that make up My Chinese Procession are events at which Tan herself was present. Both those she experienced, and those she uncovered over 14 years of research, Tan offers as loving witness.
