Marvie Louis was born an independent thinker into a strict religious family. His mother Mattie tells the 5 year old that voodoo killed his Granddaddy, Marvie Louis decides to subdue his independent nature and adopts the rules of religious as a precaution but nothing else goes right. When the threat of voodoo seems abated the now 10th grader again acts without regard and develops a promising music career. Later, voodoo strikes his beloved twin sister Mary Louise. The now 20 year old Marvie Louis prays asking God for protection; offering to sacrifice his musical career. God soon calls him to preach. Marvie Louis quickly backslides then Voodoo strikes him a fatal blow. However, just before dying the 25 year old makes an unbreakable bargain with God. He offers to serve God for life if God would keep him alive. God quickly commands into his service. But God's commandment seems vague; Marvie Louis doesn't understand how to complete the commandment God gave him. He only knows that to learn he must consult Doc, a holy man. He soon joins Doc's church, a colorful compound renown by the misnomer "Voodoo Village" where he serves Doc faithfully for years but the now 30 year old learns nothing about how to complete his commandment. Frustrated, Marvie Louis decides to try to understand and defeat voodoo, hoping to either satisfy his obligation to God or be free of the voodoo threat. He learns to cast anti-voodoo spells; he studies and uses engineering concepts to model the black art; and he applies Masonic principles to understand the force. Marvie Louis' acquired knowledge unexpectedly positions him for fame and financial success as a divine healer as Doc's eventual successor, so he opts to follow strict rules of religion. Then God requires 40 year old Marvie Louis to abandon his religious position and to act independently. The paranormal engineer Mason preacher is now positioned between two extremes; he is required to act without regard to religion in obedience to God. Marvie Louis is soon entwined in a New World Order, not religious and not freewill but a convolution of both. God finally tells Marvie Louis that to complete his commandment he must write his memoir but the 60 year old finds that he cannot remember enough details to write his life story. He questions his sanity but after fighting and winning that battle he, with the aid of God, writes his story but dares to examine God's motives for having him write it. In his final analysis Marvie Louis understands that his story is a letter from God to his wife Marvie Louis; that man's high expectation of reward for zealously serving God results in deep disappointment as it creates a dilemma that can only be resolved by God killing his wife.
