The prose and poems were read at the Classics Symposium in conjunction with The Year of Homer in 1991. This is a wholly revised, illustrated version of that presentation. The immediate touchstones for this selection of the poems are Homer, the legendary author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, other writings attributed to the blind bard, and the broad Greek tradition of antiquity. The classic world-view is expanded herein by the insightful words of Ramón del Valle-Inclán (Spain, 1866-1936) on the traditions and beliefs of ancient Greece. They, too, are touchstones for this collection. The prose texts that introduce the collection and accompany the poems are from The Lamp of Marvels (Lindisfarne Press, 1986), his translation of La lámpara maravillosa (1916) by Ramón del Valle-Inclán. ROBERT LIMA, award-winning poet, internationally-recognized critic, bibliographer, playwright and translator, is Professor Emeritus of Spanish and Comparative Literatures at The Pennsylvania State University, as well as Fellow Emeritus of the Institute for the Arts and Humanistic Studies. Robert Lima began writing poetry in college, published his first pieces in Lynx and statements (Marvin Bell, Ed.), read in numerous Greenwich Village venues in the 60s. He co-edited Seventh Street Anthology (1961) and Judson Review (2nd era). Was Poet-in-Residence at U. of San Marcos, Perú. He has published ten books of poetry and over 500 poems in many venues. He had five exhibits of his poetry, with photos and art. From March through August 2004 Penn State Libraries exhibited "The Poetic World of Robert Lima--A Retrospective." In 2011 he was celebrated in a festschrift titled A Confluence of Words: Studies in Honor of Robert Lima. King Juan Carlos I of Spain dubbed him Knight Commander in the Order of Queen Isabel in 2003.
