Picturesque and historic Cramond is the site of the earliest recorded settlement in Scotland, and several millennia later was occupied by a Roman fort, evidence of which can still be seen today. Despite this important early history, most of the village's surviving architecture dates from the eighteenth century onwards, although there are notable exceptions including the Bishop's Tower and Cramond Kirk. Old Cramond reveals that many of today's well-kept harbourside buildings were ramshackle and crumbling in the 1950s, when major restoration work was undertaken to preserve them. An important aspect of the village's past was its industrial heritage, centring around what were originally watermills on the River Almond, later powered by steam. These, too, are featured in a number of pictures. Other more familiar Cramond sights include the ferry across the Almond, Cramond Island, the Old Schoolhouse, harbourside, Cargilfield School and Barnton Hotel.
