"The County," as it was fondly known by its pupils, became a grammar school after the Rab Butler Act was passed in 1946 to ..".provide quality education for bright boys and girls" and provide equal opportunities for children of all backgrounds. These memoirs from Willesden County Grammar School pupils span the school's history from its beginning in 1924 to its closing in 1966. The Old Uffingtonians, an organization of former pupils collected these memoirs which became the basis of this book. These memoirs from pre-war, wartime and post-war describe the Old Uffs' life and events in London and the world around them as they progress through their school years. Pre-war memoirs record the bucolic era when the school was built on allotments. Wartime memoirs are sad, funny and heartwarming when the school was evacuated to Northampton, often with pupils' younger siblings. For example on arrival pupils' were taken to a large hall and seated on the floor as prospective foster-parents reviewed them, saying "I'll take that one" or "those two." Not all pupils were selected. Post-war memoirs record the changes in the school in the anti-establishment '60's era. With forward thinking Dr. Roberts at its helm, "The County" lived up to its expectations preparing its diverse pupils for university and ongoing successes in the world. Teachers like Miss Stevenson went beyond the call of duty, taking advance courses herself to prepare her pupils for university. Patricia H-F Moore, a former "County" pupil, is the author of Tomorrow is Another Day and other short stories. She lives in Sarasota, Florida with her husband and cats.
