ONE MORE RAINBOW... BEFORE THE LIGHTS GO OUT The final anthology of poetry, street-verse, and song lyrics, from musician and prose-performer Paul Murphy. Reflective works, mostly written during the final stages of his battle with a wasting Auto-Immune Neurological Disease, along with a few delves into his back-catalogue. As ever, his works focus on the issues and problems affecting others - social ails, relationships (from both sides), children, childhood... Along the way, a couple of light-hearted pieces intervene; his internet-hit elegy for Queen Elizabeth II is included; and some truly heart-breaking personal pieces close out the collection. The lights never go out, with works like this shining on. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ YOUR MAJESTY There's quiet in the courtyard now A nation stops and mourns One who touched our lives each day Lies still; esteem-adorned Flags are at half-mast now Hearts fly even lower The seasons send condolences Honoured just to know her E'en the wind does hold her breath Not to disturb your sleep As any one who knows respect Do bow their heads and weep Time, she takes no prisoners Not pauper, Prince or Queen But, she cried, as she took you To Heaven's golden sheen Minutes are remorseless But you shared yours with all Around you, many stumbled But not once did you stall Your children pay you homage Seventy million strong What viper voice would snipe you Within that tear-decked throng When shadows clouded overhead In war; and despair-drenched peace Your words brought comfort, strength and hope And resolve that never ceased How many were blessed with your smile? Captivated by your grace? Supported by your kindness? By your warmth embraced? Enraptured by your firefly charm? Empowered by your actions? Balmed by your iron-clad calm Whatever the Devil's distractions? Your majesty was plain to see In all you said you did Your affinity, your empathy While scoundrels sniped and hid In deeds you said, "In no darkest hour..." "Shall we forget how to stand" As even in your own life Did sadness ofttimes land... Your sceptre was your dignity Your crown, your people's heart Tho' you sit with angels now Your spirit shall ne'er depart We'll never see your like again But once such greatness comes No nation shall forget you Where're its river runs Though your presence may have left us Your legacy marches on 'cross each green blade of this great land For ever; and beyond (c) Paul Murphy / 2022
