Edward Frank, of Orlando, Florida, a wealthy banker and a mob money launderer, fantasizes about attaining social equality with Atlanta's Jay Hamilton, owner of Hamilton Real Estate Enterprises. Ed is convinced Jay has snubbed him and vows revenge. He begins his treacherous plot by killing two of Jay's closest friends, Jonathon and Marie Caldwell; Jonathon was a member of Jay's board of directors. Next, Ed kidnaps a distant relative of Jay's, and follows with kidnaping the woman Jay loves. Finally, Ed begins a public attack on Jay's integrity, assured he will be powerless to defend himself because of the captives. Jay and those who know and respect his ethical values must involve themselves in an escalating war for his company and good name. All the while, Ed is going insane and an organization more powerful and sinister than the mob must, reluctantly, involve itself to maintain its far-reaching power.
