This is the story of the last year in the life of a girl who went out to Polish Ukraine to work as a governess in the house of a Polish aristocrat. She was the daughter of George Alfred Fripp, a well-known English water-colour artist, who did work for Queen Victoria. She had studied music and trained as an opera singer in Dresden and Munich, but her doctor had discouraged her from becoming an opera singer because she had a weak heart. This work was arranged, edited, abridged and prepared for publication by my grandmother Mabel Margaret Boase, widow of William Norman Boase, Provost of St Andrews, and completed in 1945. But I have added a preface, notes and an index, and prepared a list of illustrations, most of which have never been published. My grandmother is the author of The Happy Potterer and A Horse for Company, both books now long out-of-print containing many amusing anecdotes about St Andrews and the Fife countryside. This work gives a fascinating insight into daily life in the household of a Polish count in Polish Galicia (now in Ukraine) when it was a province of the Austrian Empire. Alice died there aged only 35.
