Primary care providers (PCPs) report using in-office counseling as a first-line treatment for the management of childhood depression (Olson et al., 2001; Rushton, Clark, & Freed, 2000a; Williams et al., 2004), but antidepressant medications are prescribed more often than would be expected based on treatment recommendations put forth by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (Olfson et al., 2003).
