Description

FORWARDI am pleased to present the Proceedings of the sixty-fourth annual convention held in Cincinnati, Ohio, October 7 to 10, 2002. The Canon Law Society of America annually publishes to our members and to others in the canonical community the major address and seminars presented at the annual meeting. Each year an attempt is made to produce the CLSA roceedings as soon as possible after the convention. In the collection of materials for this manuscript, I wish to express my gratitudeto the presenters who provided their final texts in a most timely fashion. Preparation of the texts for publication was facilitated this year by the submission of electronic versions of the presentations. In the preparation of the texts, every attempt was made to maintain consistency by relying on both The Chicago Manual of Style and the style of previous issues of CLSA Proceedings. In this year's edition of CLSA Proceedings, readers will find the final report of the task force studying the selection of bishops in the United States. Established by convention resolution in 1996, the committee fulfilled its mandate and reports back to members on this particular topic in CLSA Proceedings. Readers will also find in this volume a slight alteration to reporting of tribunal statistics. The traditional divisions of first and second instance tribunals was retained. The slight innovation is to sub-divide the material by sections. All statistical material available for a particular diocese or archdiocese will be contained in one particular section. The Canon Law Society of America, established on November 12, 1939 as a professional association dedicated to the promotion of both the study and the application of canon law in the Catholic Church today numbers over 1500 members who reside in the United States and forty other countries. CLSA Proceedings 64 (2002) should take its place among previous volumes as a professional resource. The text contains a high degree of consistency and accuracy which should further scholarly research.Arthur J. Espelage, O.F.M.Executive CoordinatorCanon Law Society of America
