This book was created as a vehicle to explore and collect information about public art at UMass Dartmouth-for our purposes, "public art" refers to objects and images that appeared to be intentionally made and displayed in public spaces on campus during the time of documentation. The main feature of the publication is a catalogue of documented public art on campus with bits of writing and artwork from a few folks who contributed to the public thinking we did around the project. We've also included a few instances of controversial public artworks from the region (Providence, RI, Newport, RI, and New Bedford, MA) to add context about the general place where UMass Dartmouth is situated, and thus where the campus artwork exists. The collection of texts, images, and drawings included were compiled by me (Roz Crews), Brittni Harvey, and Jesse Sullivan with contributions from Ariana Leo, Cody Oliveira-Gingras, Emma Soucek, Taylor Maroney, Stacy Latt Savage (courtesy of Lara Stone), Eric Lintala, Patricia Flynn, and Dylan Podesta. This project was produced by us as members of the Center for Undisciplined Research, a nine-month public artwork and student-centered research collective sited at UMass Dartmouth as a tool for people to critically examine what and how they want to learn-a space to be curious and extend the limits of what constitutes research. The Center is the primary project I'm working on during my artist residency at the university, and it is the catalyst for this book. As soon as I landed in Dartmouth about four months ago, I became interested in what other kinds of public art exist on campus, and I quickly got to work meeting people and having conversations about the campus' architecture, art, public space, and the definition of "public."
