"The Life Story of One of the Most Remarkable Americans of the Century--the Contemporary of Wendell Phillips and William Lloyd Garrison--How He Lived and How He Died a Few Days ago in Angelica, N.Y."So begins the tribute written by John P. Herrick, about the Rev. Calvin Fairbank, "Abolitionist, Friend of Abraham Lincoln, Horace Greeley, and Frederick Douglas and one of the most conspicuous figures in the anti-slavery movement a generation ago."This story, in Fairbank's own words and originally edited from his manuscript, describes how he liberated 47 men, women and children from the bonds of slavery, which resulted in his own loss of freedom. Fairbank spent seventeen years and four months in Kentucky prisons, suffering thirty-five thousand, one hundred and five stripes from a leather strap wielded by his jailors before it was over.Awaiting him on the outside was his faithful fiancée, Mandana Tileston, and other friends and supporters who fought for his freedom. Once released, Fairbank spoke to thousands, detailing his experiences. He made his way back to Allegany County, where he grew up, settling in the village of Angelica. He died here on October 12, 1898, just three weeks shy of his 82nd birthday. Fairbank is buried in Until the Day Dawn Cemetery in Angelica. This book originally was published in 1890. It is reprinted 200 years after his birth--November 3, 1816--in celebration of the life and times of an extraordinary man, the Rev. Calvin Fairbank. In the addendum are a number of additional items--including photographs and illustrations--about Fairbank and his connection to Angelica.
