When wealthy banker Bradford Matthews is found dead slumped over his desk in his palatial ancestral home with an ugly wound on the top of his head, there are plenty of suspects in his dysfunctional family. Wife Clara, glitzy former Las Vegas cocktail waitress; Wilbur, her shiftless, drug prone son by a former marriage; Helen Matthews, his beautiful, loving daughter who is suspected of stealing Clara's expensive mink coat; George Carlson, Helen's boyfriend and high school football hero who disappears while Police Chief Harper is looking for him; and mysterious Frank Bartell, who spends a lot of time at the Matthews mansion, supposedly promoting a gold mining scheme using the banker's money. The door to Matthews' study is locked from the inside; all the windows are closed and locked from the inside-except one. It is partially open but there are no footprints outside in the soft soil beneath the window. Helen's first call is to the Deacon, lifelong family friend who works with Chief Harper to bring the case to its violent and bloody conclusion.
