This is a story of love, loss, betrayal, and redemption as seen through the eyes of Captain Michael LaRocque, Interstellar Ranger. Michael's latest discovery, Planet 1641, is a treasure trove of exotic wildlife, magnificent scenic vistas, and abundant natural resources. The Consortium of Allied Planets can't wait to exploit those resources and colonize the planet. The only problem is that the planet is already occupied. Michael could take his discovery bonus and move on, but he can't bear the thought of Planet 1641's inhabitants being wiped out just to feed the greed of the Consortium's large corporations. So, with the help of Dee Sanders, a top political operative, and young Conor Sinclair, heir to Planet 1641's throne, he assembles a team in a long-shot effort to save Planet 1641 from the greedy corporations and corrupt politicians. But, as others join him in his quest, Michael is drawn deeper and deeper into the world of interstellar politics and soon finds that everyone, even his beloved Dee Sanders, has their own political agenda and goals. As events unfold, Michael's decisions lead the entire Consortium to the brink of civil war. With billions of lives at stake, Michael must decide who he can really trust to save Planet 1641 from all who would do it harm. In the process, he discovers much about himself, the importance of family, and what it means to be human.
